Step 5: Read the prompt line by line, then write your own
Here you see what each part of the prompt built on the example page, then write your own. Each line was decided in an earlier step. This page sorts them into the five fields of a builder brief, the same five fields you'll use for every tool in this course.
| The prompt says | What it built | Brief field | Decided in |
|---|---|---|---|
| "Turn the attached Northline pipeline deck into one interactive web page for Priya, Marcus, and the VP of Sales." | One page, written for those three readers | What I'm building, Who it's for | Step 2 |
| "Use only the numbers in the deck." | Every figure on the page traces back to a slide | Source material | This page, below |
| "Put four headline cards across the top (open pipeline, commit vs quota, at risk, won this week)," | The four cards: $2.4M, $1.41M of $1.5M, $535k, $112k | What done looks like | Step 3 |
| "then a forecast vs quota chart with a slider for how many best-case deals close," | The forecast chart and its slider | What done looks like | Step 3 |
| "pipeline by stage bars, a donut by rep," | The stage bars and the rep donut | What done looks like | Step 3 |
| "and a sortable table of every open deal with the at-risk rows highlighted and their risk note shown." | The table of all 38 deals, with Meridian and the other three at-risk deals highlighted | What done looks like | Step 3 |
| "Let me filter by rep, stage, and at risk only, and click any deal to see its details." | The filter bar, and the details panel with the next step and any ask | The decision or task it helps with | Step 4 |
| "Make it dark and sleek." | The look. Leave it out and the AI picks one for you. | What done looks like | This page |
| "Give it to me as one file that opens when someone double-clicks it, even offline." | One file your team can open without installing anything or being online | What I'm building | Tested in Step 6 |
The line that matters most is "Use only the numbers in the deck." Cut it, and the AI fills space with things that sound right for a sales page:
- a win rate and a next-quarter target, neither of which is in the deck
- an "AI insights" panel predicting which deals will close
- a login screen nobody asked for
All of it looks plausible, so nobody at the meeting can tell it was made up.
The Northline prompt in the five fields
- What I'm building: Turn the attached Northline pipeline deck into one interactive web page
- Who it's for: Priya, Marcus, and the VP of Sales
- The decision or task it helps with: Let me filter by rep, stage, and at risk only, and click any deal to see its details.
- Source material: Use only the numbers in the deck.
- What done looks like:
- What the page shows: Put four headline cards across the top (open pipeline, commit vs quota, at risk, won this week), then a forecast vs quota chart with a slider for how many best-case deals close, pipeline by stage bars, a donut by rep, and a sortable table of every open deal with the at-risk rows highlighted and their risk note shown.
- How it looks: Make it dark and sleek.
- How you'll check it: your checklist from Step 2
Fill in the five fields for your own deck, or for Northline in your own words. Your first two answers from Step 2 are already in place.
When you submit, your answers are joined into one prompt in the same order as the Northline paragraph, with the one-file line added at the end. Your Step 2 checklist stays out of the prompt, because it's what you test the page against in Step 6.
