# Twelve by Thursday You're in the copy studio. **What you're doing this lesson:** write twelve on-voice lines for the Drift 28 launch — subjects, heroes, social — and kill the ones that don't sound like Windrow. Hear the voice first; measurement comes after. You do not need the fingerprint lesson to start. Windrow's voice, if you skipped that lesson: short sentences. No exclamation points. Concrete before clever. "The Drift 28 weighs 890 grams. That's not a typo." That is the line you are defending. The Drift 28 brief, expanded: four email subject lines, three landing-page heroes, five social posts. Twelve **variants** (different lines for different places), one launch, Thursday. This is exactly the work the models get handed — in the Reuters Institute's UK survey, one journalist in six generates parts of articles at least monthly (the heavier traffic is transcription and copy-editing, but one in six is a lot of variant batches), and the New York Times' reported newsroom rules explicitly put machine-suggested headline and social-copy options on the *allowed* side of the line, with a human picking. Machine proposes, you dispose. Fine. The craft question is what "disposing" looks like when there are twelve of them. ## Stop pasting variants into a doc The amateur move is a Google Doc with twelve lines and some highlighting. The problem isn't aesthetics — it's that a line in a doc can't be checked, sorted, killed, or reported on. So the first act of this lesson is a record-keeping decision: **a variant is a record.** An id you can cite in a kill log ("V07 died for a reason, here it is"), a **channel** (subject / hero / social — the place the line has to fit), and the text itself. Because the channel is half the spec. A subject line that runs 80 characters isn't off-voice — it's truncated mid-thought in every inbox preview, which is worse. Give each channel a character budget — 55 for subjects, 90 for heroes, 140 for the social teaser — and the check is one comparison. Your real numbers will differ per client and per platform; the point is that they're *numbers you wrote down*, not lore in your head. When the email platform changes its preview length, you change one integer and every future batch inherits it. ## What a variant has to survive By the end of this lesson every variant faces three checks, in order: 1. **Banned phrases** — the sludge list from the voice pack (the written rules for how this client sounds). 2. **Voice rules** — exclamations, sentence ceiling. Measured, not felt. 3. **Channel budget** — the character math above. Survivors ship to the client. Everything else gets killed *with a recorded reason* — and the reasons turn out to matter as much as the survivors. That's the kill log, later this lesson. First, though, you need to see what you're defending against: the specific, predictable way generated copy goes wrong at scale.2d:T871,# Drift doesn't hit variant one. It hits variant nine. Ask a model for one Windrow subject line with the voice pack in the prompt and you'll usually get something decent. Ask for twelve and watch what happens across the batch: variant one is clean, variant four picks up an exclamation point, variant nine opens with "Unleash." The pack didn't fall out of the prompt — the model is being pulled, token by token, toward the center of everything it was ever trained on. And the center of all marketing copy ever written is exactly the sludge your banned list exists to stop. This is why "I put the brand voice in the prompt" is necessary but nowhere near sufficient. The prompt moves the *average* of the batch toward Windrow. It does not guarantee any *individual* variant, and you ship individuals, not averages. A stray violation or two slipping through the batch is exactly what prompt-only enforcement leaves you holding — and those strays are exactly what the client forwards back with "??" in the subject line. So the pack gets its second job. Run the editor: `check_variant()` reads the same dict that briefed the model and audits each variant coming back. Banned phrases via lowercase substring match. Exclamations, if the pack forbids them. And the sentence ceiling — note it checks the *longest* sentence with `max()`, not the average. A variant that averages fine can still hide one 22-word run-on, and averages are where run-ons go to hide. First variant: three violations, itemized. Second: clean, and the empty list is the point — **an empty list is what "on-voice" looks like when it's a fact instead of a feeling.** You can put an empty list in an email to a client. Try doing that with a feeling. One thing this check deliberately doesn't do: judge whether the line is *good*. "890 grams. Nothing you won't use." passes the gate and might still be the weakest of the twelve — that call stays with you, and no client is paying for a copywriter who outsources it. The gate's job is narrower and dumber: make sure nothing you *didn't* choose ships by accident. Dumb checks, run every time, catch what tired eyes miss on variant nine.2e:T8da,# The kills are data too Most copywriters treat rejected variants as trash — delete, move on. The kills are the most informative thing your batch produces, and they're free. You just have to stop deleting them. **The kill log** is one record per dead variant: id, the rule that fired, the specific reason. Three uses, in ascending order of value: 1. **Client defense.** "Why only nine variants?" has an answer with receipts: V02 died for "unleash", V07 was 16 characters over the subject budget. You look like someone running a process, because you are. 2. **Prompt repair.** If "banned" kills dominate the log, your drafting prompt isn't carrying the banned list hard enough — move it higher, make it explicit, add an example. If "channel" kills dominate, the prompt isn't stating the character budget. The kill log tells you *which sentence of your prompt to fix.* That's a feedback loop most people writing with models never build, which is why their batch quality never improves. 3. **Pack evolution.** A phrase that keeps almost-shipping ("adventure awaits") isn't on the banned list yet but keeps making you wince. Two batches of wincing is evidence. Into the list it goes, versioned. **The batch record** is the second artifact, and the quieter one: which model, which pack version, which prompt file, what the counts were. Boring — until someone asks, three weeks out, "the hero copy on the landing page says *guaranteed for life* — where did that come from?" With batch records you answer in one lookup: batch b3, pack v1, this prompt file, shipped on this date. Without them you're reconstructing your own work from memory, in front of a client, and memory is exactly the instrument that was too tired to catch the problem the first time. Newsroom AI policies converge on human review before anything publishable ships — the 52-organization comparison found that line almost everywhere. What nearly nobody writes down is the *evidence trail* that makes review auditable after the fact. Freelancers get this wrong worse than newsrooms: no institution is keeping records for you. Two dicts per batch. That's the whole overhead. That list is the **claim check**. You do not need regex — or the earlier copy lessons — to start. CNET published 77 machine-generated finance explainers under the byline "CNET Money Staff." After it came out, CNET's own audit issued corrections on 41 of them — a 53% correction rate — with factual errors in basic financial math and, per Futurism's reporting, plagiarized phrasing in the mix. Sports Illustrated is a different failure. Futurism reported SI's operator running product reviews under AI-generated author personas supplied by a content vendor; the content was pulled and the vendor relationship ended. Arena Group denied the articles themselves were AI-written. CNET is the correction-rate story. SI is the byline story. CNET is why this lesson exists: generated copy went to publication with no claim-by-claim check between the model and the reader. The error rate was always going to surface. The only question was whether it surfaced in a pre-publication table or in the press. ## The rule that follows Journalism wrote the fix down decades before the models arrived. The SPJ code: take responsibility for the accuracy of your work; **verify information before releasing it**; use original sources whenever possible. And per coverage of AP's standards, AI output is "treated as unvetted source material" — which is the single most useful sentence about generated copy ever written. Not banned. Not trusted. *Unvetted* — the same status as a tip from a stranger. You can use it; you must check it first. You write product copy, not news. Doesn't matter — the mechanism transfers whole. Your Drift 28 copy says 890 grams, free shipping over $75, rated 4.8 stars, guaranteed for life. Every one of those is a **claim** (a checkable fact), and the model that drafted the copy is capable of having invented any of them, with identical confidence either way. If the warranty is actually ten years, "guaranteed for life" isn't a voice problem. It's a refund dispute, a review-site pile-on, and depending on jurisdiction and luck, a legal letter — addressed to your client, forwarded to you. ## The pipeline this lesson builds Three moving parts, drilled in order: **extract** every checkable claim from the copy, by hand first, so none hide. **Verify** each against a **source table** — a real document, never the model. **Gate** the ship decision on every row being closed, and when something wrong has already shipped, log the correction so the same hole never opens twice. CNET rebuilt this process in public, under a news cycle. You get to build it this afternoon, for free.34:T97e,# A claim is anything a reader could call you on Before you can verify claims, you have to find them all — and "read it carefully" is not a finding method. You read your own copy the way you wrote it: nodding along. The claim your eye slides over is precisely the one the model invented, because the model's whole talent is producing sentences your eye slides over. So extraction goes mechanical. What counts as checkable? The test: **could a reader, holding evidence, prove this sentence wrong?** "The pack that skips the parts you skip" — unfalsifiable, pure voice, no row needed. "Weighs 890 grams" — a scale settles it. Checkable. Which gives you three families to hunt: - **Numbers.** Weights, prices, thresholds, star ratings, durations. Every digit in copy is a claim. The regex `\d+(?:\.\d+)?` catches integers and decimals — 890, 75, 4.8 — without dragging trailing punctuation along. - **Absolutes.** "Free", "guaranteed", "every", "always." Small words, enormous promises. "Free shipping" is a checkable claim about a policy document that has conditions your copy just erased. - **Superlatives.** "Lightest", "fastest", "first." A superlative is a claim about *every competitor at once* — the most expensive kind of sentence to be wrong in, because the competitor it's wrong about is the one who'll notice. Run the editor. One line of `re.findall` on the lowercased copy, four claims out: `890`, `free`, `75`, `guaranteed`. That's the checklist for the verification table — each one becomes a row, each row needs a source, and the copy waits until they're all closed. Is a keyword-and-number regex the whole art of claim extraction? No — it will miss "backed by our warranty" and flag a harmless "28" in a product name, and you'll tune it per client the way you tune the banned list. Doesn't matter. The bar it has to clear isn't perfection; it's *your tired eyes on deadline*, and it clears that bar every single run. The regex never nods along. UK journalist surveys show fact-checking among the least common AI uses — 12%, against 22% for research. Practitioners trust models least exactly where the stakes are highest, which is correct instinct. Notice the pipeline here respects it: the model gets no vote in this lesson. Extraction is a regex, verification is a lookup against documents, and both would work exactly the same if the copy had been typed by a human who happened to be sloppy.35:T92f,# When it ships wrong anyway It will. A gate reduces the error rate; nothing zeroes it. The 4.8-star claim clears review because it *looks* like the kind of number that's true, the page goes live, and eleven days later the client's support inbox produces a customer who checked. This one shipped from the batch before the gate existed — the ship gate you build next step would have held it at `rated 4.8 stars: OPEN`, which is exactly why you're about to build it. What you do in the next hour is the difference between a professional with a process and CNET with a news cycle. **The correction is prompt and prominent.** State what ran, state what's true, place the fix where the people who saw the error will see it. The silent edit — quietly swapping 4.8 for 4.6 and hoping — is the one move that converts an error into a cover-up. Errors are survivable; every working copywriter has shipped one. Cover-ups are what the screenshots are of. **The log entry is for you, and it's the more valuable half.** Run the editor. Five fields, two of which most people never write down: - `how_it_got_past` — the honest mechanism, not the apology. "The number came from the model and no source row was opened" is a diagnosis you can act on. "I should have been more careful" is a mood. - `gate_strengthened` — the only field that changes the future. Every correction ends by making some check stricter: a new pattern in the extractor, a new rule in the pack, a new required field in the table. The log entry isn't filed until this field is filled. That's the culture, encoded: **a correction that doesn't strengthen a gate is just an apology with a timestamp.** Blame changes nothing about the next batch; the extractor regex does. This is where lesson 2's batch records pay off. `how_it_got_past` is answerable in one lookup — batch b3, pack v1, this prompt file — instead of an archaeology dig through your own sent folder. Model, prompt, pack version, claims table, corrections: that's a chain of evidence for every piece you ship. Almost nobody teaches this and almost nobody's portfolio has it, which is exactly why the corrections log is the strangest competitive asset you'll build this chapter: it's a document of your mistakes that makes clients trust you *more*.
